U.S. bans Ansatsu Kyoushitsu again

Yusei Matsui's popular manga "Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assassination Classroom)" is once again facing the possibility of being banned from another school in the United States due to its controversial content. On this occasion, the school district of Horry County, South Carolina, is reviewing the work after a complaint from a parent who considers the violent and sexual content of the manga inappropriate. According to a report by WMBF News at the end of September, the work is being evaluated to decide whether it will be removed from school libraries.

The father who filed the complaint commented, "Even if I didn't have children, I wouldn't want a child to read this book. There are girls in lingerie over men... In addition, several chapters talk about murders, and there are images of guns, rifles, knives, and mentions of killing on the pages."

While the review process is taking place, which could take up to 30 days, "Ansatsu Kyoushitsu" is temporarily unavailable in Horry County District schools. Although an official decision has not yet been made, historically this manga has been one of the most banned in the United States. Other popular titles, such as "My Hero Academia," "Soul Eater" and "Black Butler," have also been banned from schools in several states because of their content, which is deemed inappropriate for young readers.

The plot of "Ansatsu Kyoushitsu," which revolves around an octopus-like alien who threatens to destroy Earth if he is not eliminated within a year, has been one of the main reasons why manga has been censored in various educational institutions. The scenario of armed students in a school environment has generated special concern, especially in a country like the United States, where gun violence in schools is an extremely sensitive issue.

In September 2024, a tragic shooting occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, where two 14-year-old students and two teachers were killed. This unfortunate incident adds to the growing wave of gun violence in the United States, which has led many to blame popular media, including video games and anime, as indirect causes of the problem.

This is not an isolated case, since other works, such as the manga "Sasaki and Miyano", which features a relationship between men, was also recently banned by the Brevard County school district, highlighting the growing censorship in American schools of titles that touch on topics considered inappropriate for young people, which has generated a debate around freedom of expression and the limits of content for young audiences.
