Following the end of the original Evangelion, the creator received several death threats due to the upbeat ending of the original Evangelion, with the last 2 episodes basically months of therapy condensed into two anime episodes. Shinji being horrible and someone who only knows how to hurt others (masturbating at the sight of Asuka, trying to hang her neck after the "end of the world") is a reflection of the audience's reaction to his original work. In the film, they even show some real-life scenes with people watching a movie in the theater, showing some people cosplaying the characters from Evangelion, and showing photos of the threats. All to show that "we try to be optimistic and say 'life is shit, but it has its good side', but if you're screwed, fuck this shit. Is that what you wanted?'"
