The isekai has dominated in the last decade

The MyAnimeList platform recently shared a graph illustrating the growth in the number of isekai-themed anime that have debuted in each season since 2015. This subgenre, which transports characters to alternate worlds, has gained considerable popularity over the years, accumulating a greater number of premieres in each season and showing a notable trend towards expansion in the last decade.
In the graph shared by MyAnimeList, it can be seen how the number of isekai anime has grown progressively over time. Although in 2015 and 2016 the number of premieres was relatively low, with only two or three titles in each season, from 2019 and especially in recent years, there has been a sustained increase, with seasons that came to have up to ten titles simultaneously. In particular, the summer and autumn seasons seem to be the preferred ones for the premiere of this type of series.

The isekai phenomenon has been the subject of debate in the community, with opinions divided between those who consider that its popularity has saturated the industry with repetitive storylines and those who celebrate the emergence of some outstanding series within the subgenre. Here are some comments from the community about the rise of isekai anime:
- "Huge contributor to the reason I've moved away from anime in recent years. You unfold the season list and it all seems like generic fantasy and isekai garbage."
- "99% is pure kid's rubbish, but some are really cool."
- "Why did isekai grow in popularity? (I'm not criticizing, I'm just curious) Is it popular in Japan?"
- "The best trend, to be honest. I understand that some works are bad, but thanks to that we got great series."
- "And the quality of the animes being inversely proportional to the quantity of isekai. It's impressive how this industry is being destroyed."
- "While it was refreshing when it started, it became uninteresting very quickly, save for a few big ones like Re:Zero."
- "What if it's the overall rise of anime? More anime divided into different genres. Unless the big increase is in just a few genres."
- "Well, I'm not a fan of isekai, but I tried Mushoku Tensei, and it was a good anime."
- "I don't know why the isekai genre gets so much hate, some of the best anime I've seen have been isekai. Not all of them have been good, like in any anime genre, but that's okay, I just don't watch them."
- "I didn't see any of them and I don't feel like I missed anything."
