Last year, Japan also shone at the Annies, with Takeshi Honda winning in the Best Character Animation – Motion Picture category for "The Boy and the Heron." In addition, the legendary Hayao Miyazaki was awarded for Best Storyboard Direction – Film, once again cementing anime's global impact on the industry.

"Look Back": A work that transcends the screen

Directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Flip Flappers) and produced by Studio Durian, "Look Back" is an adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga of the same name. Oshiyama was not only in charge of directing, but also wrote the script and designed the characters. The art direction was in charge of Kiyoshi Sameshima, with music by Haruka Nakamura and distribution by Avex Pictures in Japan, where it was released on June 28, 2024.

The story follows Fujino, an outgoing student admired by her peers for her humorous comics, and Kyomoto, a recluse with exceptional artistic talent. What begins as a rivalry transforms into a deep bond, exploring the challenges and joys of pursuing artistic excellence. The film has been hailed for emotionally capturing the struggles and triumphs of artists, leaving a lasting impression on its audience.

Since its inception, the Annie Awards have recognized excellence in animation in all its forms, from feature films and series to visual effects and character design. In a year where Japanese productions shine once again, the ceremony promises to be a memorable event for fans of anime and animation in general.

Who will be the big winners? We'll have to wait until February 8 to find out on a night that celebrates the creativity, innovation, and talent behind the world's best animated productions.
