Although Anno decided to keep the details of the project secret, it is known that he will be producing the new film, which is scheduled to start production in 2025. The renowned director expressed his respect and gratitude towards Space Battleship Yamato, mentioning that if he hadn't discovered the series 50 years ago, he wouldn't be the person he is today.

This new project will take a different direction from the series of remakes that began with Space Battleship Yamato 2199 in 2012 and will continue with Yamato Forever REBEL 3199, the second part of which will be released on November 22, 2024 in theaters. Anno also highlighted the importance of leaving a legacy for future generations, combining the new and the classic in this next project.

Space Battleship Yamato was originally conceived by the late Yoshinobu Nishizaki and brought to the screen by director Leiji Matsumoto. Since its premiere on October 6, 1974, the series has spawned sequels, movies, and remakes, cementing itself as a pivotal piece of anime history. Hideaki Anno, a great admirer of the work, was also involved in the creation of Yamato 2199, where he worked as a key animator and storyboarder.

More details about this new film are expected to be revealed in the coming months, which promises to expand the Space Battleship Yamato universe under the visionary direction of Anno.
