Fans ask for a remake of Dragon Ball

A viral video of "Dragon Ball" has generated great expectation among fans by showing what a modern remake of the classic anime would look like, right after the premiere of Dragon Ball Daima. This video, uploaded to Twitter by user Piccolo Damayonnaiz, uses official footage from Toei Animation and combines scenes from the films and series with a new edited soundtrack, achieving an experience that many describe as more faithful to the essence of Dragon Ball.
The video is a nearly five-minute compilation that brings together the early adventures of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. For this, he uses scenes from the recent productions "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" and the first episode of "Dragon Ball Daima". Chikashi Kubota, the lead animation director on both projects, was in charge of the animations, while Piccolo Damayonnaiz adapted the soundtrack, using music composed by Hidenori Arai, to give the video the feel of a classic Dragon Ball episode.
Highlights of the viral video include Goku's iconic battle against the Red Patrol Army in his childhood, followed by the appearance of the rebirth of this army in the Cell Arch. The famous conclusion where Gohan defeats Perfect Cell, with the symbolic support of his father, is also shown, which then gives way to the first episode of Dragon Ball Daima, which begins with a review of the Majin Buu arc. The video ends with Goku defeating Kid Buu with the Genkidama and making a gesture of approval towards Earth.
Despite the excitement that Dragon Ball Daima has generated, many fans have expressed their desire for a traditional remake of the original series, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, that does not cut filler episodes like Dragon Ball Z Kai did. This demand has grown, especially after the uncertainty about the future of the franchise after the death of the original creator, Akira Toriyama.
The most curious thing is that Chikashi Kubota himself has shown interest in working on a Dragon Ball remake since the release of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero in 2022, which increases fan speculation. Here are some comments that have emerged on social networks:
- "What an amazing job! 👏 I insist that I would love a remake of Dragon Ball. More faithful to the manga and short (between OGDB and DBZ there are 444 episodes), as well as a more consistent animation and direction. Perhaps one of the impediments is that it could be censored. On the other hand, Kikuchi's music is so unique, magnificent, special, iconic and irreplaceable. Anyway, if this never happens, I hope Toei releases it on a good DVD/Blu-Ray and not that 1080p crap with hundreds of filters, over-saturation and upscaling."
- "I think the DB scenes come from an old movie made with GT animation that told the story of Goku against the Red Patrol."
- "No. Dragon Ball is fine as it is. If they redo it, many parts would be censored. Toei wouldn't let adult themes pass us these days."
- "Dragon Ball animation was always consistently good, what needs a remake is Z and Super. They should go the 'Path of Power' route if they plan to remake the original."
- "I saw your video looping, like 200 times when I found it. It made me watch Super Hero, which turned out to be great."
- "This is a perfect flow from the Red Patrol Arc to the Majin Buu Arc and a perfect idea of what a Dragon Ball remake might look like."
- "I don't want them to touch Dragon Ball unless they keep it ONE ON ONE."
- "Maybe I'm being very naïve, but what if they use Daima's popularity as an opportunity to do a complete remake starting from the original?"
