This was the end of Jujutsu Kaisen

This article includes spoilers for the "Jujutsu Kaisen" manga. Discretion is advised to the reader.

After months of anticipation, the "Jujutsu Kaisen" manga came to an end with its Chapter 271, leaving fans with divided opinions about the final development of the story. Although many expected a closure more in line with the great battles and intense emotions that characterized the series, the denouement was described as unexpectedly anticlimactic.

The previous chapter had shown the aftermath of the epic battle in Shinjuku and revealed the fate of some of the main characters. Megumi Fushiguro, for example, was seen decorating her sister Tsumiki's grave alongside Shoko Ieiri, and subsequently joining Yuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki for a new mission. On that mission, the trio of Jujutsu Sorcerers encountered a woman who claimed to see her fiancé with a different face, suggesting that they were facing a new curse.

Nobara was the first to observe that she could not feel the seal of any technique on the woman, leading to the conclusion that the curse had been placed by a highly skilled user. From this point, the final chapter focused on the search for the sorcerer responsible, with the trio analyzing the possible distances and locations from which the technique could have been activated.

Nobara suggested that they move far enough away for the technique to lose its effect, to which Yuji agreed, however, Megumi did not share that idea, preferring to stay close to identify the curse user. Through an analysis of the radius of the technique, they managed to deactivate it momentarily, allowing the woman to see the normal face of her fiancé again.

At that moment, the three sorcerers began to sense the presence of the curse user and finally located him. Surprisingly, the sorcerer turned out to be someone completely unknown and surrendered without resistance. This marked the beginning of a conversation between Yuji and the person in charge, during which Yuji recalled a chat with his master, Satoru Gojo, before the final battle.

Gojo had talked to Yuji about the pain and losses that a sorcerer inevitably faces, as well as confessing that although he had had dreams and loves, he knew that everyone would eventually overcome him. Yuji, for his part, believed that Gojo should have trusted someone stronger, but even so, he was sure that he would never forget it.

The episode culminated with a nostalgic image of the main characters, smiling as they walked away in their respective groups at sunset. Meanwhile, Ryomen Sukuna's last finger remained in the same place where it had been found at the beginning of the story, closing a cycle but leaving many fans dissatisfied with the lack of a more forceful closure.

Despite the excitement for the end of one of the most popular manga series of recent years, many fans were unhappy with the lack of impact of the final chapter. Some hoped to see Satoru Gojo resurface, or at least receive a more meaningful tribute after his tragic death in the final arc. Instead, the character only appeared in a brief flashback, which left many with a sense of emptiness.

The comparison with the end of "Tokyo Revengers" was inevitable. Like that work, Jujutsu Kaisen closed without major surprises or announcements of a sequel, leaving many readers frustrated. Some fans commented:

  • "Hopefully MAPPA can fix this and add many scenes exclusive to the anime to fill in the gaps in the story. This series needs filler."
  • "Isn't it just a panel that people saw? Why do some people talk as if they have read everything? I don't think it will change much what they already think. Regardless, I'd love to read another Gege series, I loved this one no matter the details. I hope the man rests well after so many years and comes back renewed."
  • "A weak ending, for sure, but I think the writing throughout the manga was amazing, especially the dialogue. The fact that world-building wasn't the focus is what really set this battle manga apart from others. Much more personal characters and a really addictive tone. Megumi and Yuji understanding their roles and not wanting to tell each other was amazing, Mahito's monologue in the fight with Yuji, Toji and Megumi's final meeting, Higuruma and Takaba's backstories... many memorable moments that last thanks to how they are written. In any case, they are subjective opinions."
  • "I feel that the end of the series does a lot of damage to the Sacrificial Games and the Shinjuku Showdown because in the first ones many things from the Heian era are established and suggested (Uro's story with Fujiwara, "the fallen", the story of Yorozu, the relationship of Kenjaku and Tengen, the mention of Yuta's lineage with Fujiwara and Sugawara). What was the point of mentioning that? Rereading those parts is going to be terrible because none of that leads anywhere."
  • "I guess the ending is trying to show that the world is safe even without Gojo."
  • "It's a bad ending, but I don't know why people thought the questions about the Heian era and Kenjaku's relationships with Tengen and Sukuna were going to be answered in this chapter. There is only one chapter left. What confuses me even more is why these things were established if they were never going to be answered."
  • "I've never seen a manga where the author throws random things at the end, even though the final stretch of the manga (literally before the last five chapters) was going VERY strong. Hate it or love it, Shinjuku's Showdown managed to cause mayhem in the fanbase because of how "addictive" it was, but in the last five chapters, it seems that Gege just wanted to end the series suddenly. It doesn't have a great conclusion (outside of Yuji, in my opinion), it leaves more questions than answers, and the worst thing is that it doesn't satisfy anyone. Half of the fans wanted Gojo to survive somehow, and the other half wanted the series to continue. In the end, I still love JJK, but I'd be lying if I said the ending was okay, because it's far from that."
  • "I need to apologize to Horikoshi and Kubo."
  • "Well, it was... an end. Overall, while I'm happy that the trio survived, it didn't feel shocking enough. Society did not feel changed either. Another main thing was how little the characters seemed to react to the death of their companions. I understand that Jujutsu sorcerers die a lot in their work, but still..."
  • "I don't know if you'll be able to read this, Gege. But JJK was an amazing job. It must have required a lot of effort, patience and creativity to do so. It was a very good and exciting tour. I'm looking forward to your next job. I wish you the best of luck in your future projects. My best wishes also go out to the attendees and editors who made it possible."
  • "My greatest, greatest disappointment is still Gojo. No, not because they didn't bring him back or revive him or anything like that. Sure, at first I got my hopes up like everyone else, but eventually it was over. But... a funeral? Hello? Any kind of speech or mention? In the final chapter we only get a flashback of a talk before the fight with Yuji and Gojo, and that's it? Nothing in the present? Why does he hate his own character so much?"
  • "The ending of JJK is like tying a knot with a shoestring when you need magic thread. There are so many loose ends that were forgotten. They just had to tie them up. At the same time, we don't have the full chapter yet."
  • "I need an exposition that explains why Gege insisted on rushing the ending. Because these last chapters are, honestly, a disaster. The decision to leave Gojo out for 130 chapters (what the hell?!) is one of the stupidest and worst decisions in the plot. I still don't know why he did it. Gege could have used that time to properly develop Yuji and Megumi, but instead used it to introduce 100 new characters and new power rules. Gege thinks Yuji is the protagonist, but he never treated him as such. Gojo was set up as the protagonist (because of his power and importance), but he didn't treat him as one either. The powers are so complicated and never explained until after the fact. Honestly, horrible writing all around. I don't even know what content I'd want to see the most. Maybe a prequel to Toji, haha."
  • "I feel like the recurring theme with the "bad" endings lately is that they end up with the main cast living happily ever after, haha. Sure, there are plot points that were never addressed, but overall, this one still ranks high for me. Hopefully anime will add more exposure. Did you make any special announcements at the end?"
  • "I feel like some people here aren't willing to admit that this ending was disappointing and provided very little closure. Shibuya is destroyed, Shinjuku was a battlefield, the world knows about cursed energy, and several other important plot points affecting the world at large weren't even mentioned. I don't even care that Gojo didn't have his moment, as that's literally minor compared to the amount of things that were ignored."
  • "All Gege had to do to make this acceptable was to make his characters act like human beings, feel emotions and reflect on the most traumatic experience they had when fighting and seeing their friends mutilated or killed. But no, the last few chapters were spent explaining things about domains, unnamed characters, and a final investigation that went nowhere."
  • "Seriously, the final chapters are so shallow that I'm not even angry or sad about how it ended. I'm not happy either. It's finished and I'm done with this too. I'm going to miss these threads on spoiler days, I wish you all the best."
  • "Did you think Gege wanted to continue this? He already said that he wanted to make an idol manga."
  • "Another Shonen Jump series ruined by the exhaustion that the weekly schedule brings. What a surprise."
  • "Between Yu Yu Hakusho and this trash, which had a worse ending?"
  • "We don't know where Gojo or Geto's bodies are, we don't know their last words to each other, we don't know what happened to Sukuna, or Yuji's domain name, or Megumi's potential, we don't know what happened to Gojo's six eyes or his family's talents, we don't know anything. Why was nothing concluded in this finale? I love that they're happy and I said that's all I wanted, but... This is the first manga ending I've read that I really think deserves all the criticism."
