Kusuriya no Hitorigoto gets into fiscal trouble

The renowned artist, known by her pseudonym "Nekokurage", responsible for the manga adaptation for Square Enix of the famous franchise "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries)", has been the subject of accusations by the Fukuoka Prefectural Regional Tax Office in Japan. The allegations revolve around alleged tax evasion practices.

The tax fraud was discovered based on the suspicion that the artist failed to declare more than 47 million yen in taxes, which is equivalent to more than 300 thousand US dollars. In response to these allegations, "Nekokurage" used its official Twitter account to issue a statement. In the message, the artist apologized for the omission of taxes and assured that she had already taken action in this regard by hiring an accountant to resolve the situation.
Importantly, "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries)" enjoys great popularity, especially after the recent completion of its anime adaptation and the confirmation of a second season in production. Likewise, the artist emphasized that this matter is of a personal nature and does not affect in any way the franchise in which she has worked.
- "I'm very sorry this happened this time. Previously, I ignored the issue of taxes and omitted to file the tax return. In 2022, I was ordered by the IRS to pay the principal tax, the deferred tax, and the additional non-filing tax, which I immediately paid in full. I have now hired a tax advisor and continue to file and pay my taxes correctly."
- "I accept all the consequences of my ignorance and lack of study. More than that, I simply feel sorry for everyone who has been harmed and for everyone who has supported me. I also deeply regret that I have been dishonest with all those who have fulfilled their tax obligations well. This will never happen again."
- "This is a personal matter for "Nekokurage" and has nothing to do with the original author of the work that I am in charge of adapting to anime, nor with the other artists involved in the development of the same work. Please don't confuse the two."
The community and fans of "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries)" are waiting for future developments while the legal situation of "Nekokurage" is resolved.
