Genshin Impact wants to know how much you earn

"Genshin Impact," the popular action role-playing video game developed by miHoYo, periodically sends surveys to its players to gather demographic data, opinions about the game, and other relevant information. Players who complete these surveys are usually rewarded with Mora, the in-game currency. However, the latest survey has generated mixed opinions among Japanese players due to a question that asks for information about their monthly income.
The question at hand asks Genshin Impact players to choose the range their recent net monthly income falls into, with options ranging from less than $250 to over $5000. Thankfully, the poll allows you to choose the "I'd rather not tell" option, but many players have questioned the implications of this question, especially considering that Genshin Impact is a gacha game, a system that relies heavily on microtransactions to obtain rare characters and items.

Players have suggested, half-jokingly, half-seriously, that depending on the survey results, miHoYo might try to "raise the ceiling" and raise prices. In addition, they have expressed disagreement with the invasive nature of the question, regardless of the motives behind it. Many agree that a different wording would have been more appropriate, such as: "How much money do you spend monthly on hobbies?"
Interestingly, players of "Wuthering Waves," a recently released game, have also received a survey, leading to comparisons to the "Genshin Impact" survey. Wuthering Waves' survey contains more questions about game quality and user experience, while Genshin Impact's seems to be more focused on demographics and marketing.
Considering that Genshin Impact is a free-to-play game but with numerous microtransactions to have more opportunities in the gacha and get additional characters, it is understandable that miHoYo is interested in knowing the average income of its players. This information could be valuable for adjusting your marketing strategies and in-game offerings. By knowing the purchasing power of their player base, the development team could identify opportunities to optimize their revenue, offering special packages or adjusting the prices of microtransactions.
- "What do Genshin Impact people do when they beg ?"
- "I don't really know what the intention of this is, so I closed the app."
- "I haven't answered the Genshin Impact questionnaire for over a year, so I cringe when I see that it asks about income and marital status."
- "Genshin Impact has asked me about my take-home pay... is it discriminating against my income? That sounds like my Chinese father to me."
- "In China, it's normal to ask someone you've just met, 'How much do you get paid?' It's normal and it's not rude, so you don't want to make too much of it."
- "aw it's so hard."
- "I'm sure it's because net salary = turnover limit."
