Accel World turns 15 and there's no sequel yet

This year marks an important milestone for fans of Japanese light novels, as it marks fifteen years since the publication of "Accel World", written by Reki Kawahara, began. However, despite this celebration, the franchise has been noticeably absent from animation for several years.

Since its debut on the small screen in Spring-2012, with an anime series that ran from April to September of that year with twenty-four episodes, and an original film titled "Accel World: Infinite Burst" released in July 2016, "Accel World" has remained without a sequel for twelve years, leaving aside the aforementioned film that adds nothing to the plot.
Fans of the series have expressed varying opinions about this extended hiatus. Some suggest that the lack of follow-up is because "Sword Art Online," another work by the same author, has proven to be much more successful. As one community member put it, "Sword Art Online sells better. It's the same creator and look how successful it is compared to an Accel World season and movie."
Others have pointed out that the original film, "Accel World: Infinite Burst," might have ruined the chances of a second season. As one follower opined, "I think the movie completely ruined the chances of a second season."
Additionally, some have speculated about the reasons behind the lack of a sequel, suggesting that it could be related to production decisions and rivalries between animation studios. A community member raised the possibility that Reki Kawahara had to choose between "Accel World" and "Sword Art Online" due to funding, material, or time constraints. According to this theory, production companies could have had a hand in the final decision, influencing the direction the author's animated career would take.
In short, while fans of "Accel World" celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the work, they also reflect on the absence of new installments in animation, speculating on the possible reasons behind this situation.
