A recent leak claimed that the supernatural mystery drama manga written and illustrated by Mokumokuren, "The Summer Hikaru Died (Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu)," will be getting an anime adaptation. For his part, Mokumokuren began publishing the manga through Kadokawa's Young Ace UP service in August 2021. This is the author's first serialized work and the only one he has published so far, a rather particular case where the first author's work gets an anime adaptation.

Synopsis of The Summer Hikaru Died

The best friends, Yoshiki and Hikaru, have been glued together like glue for most of their lives. They live in a small town and are the only children their age, so they find solace in each other's company. Their friendship seems quaint at first glance, but Yoshiki has noticed a change in Hikaru's behavior since one fateful summer. The "Hikaru" who now sits next to him looks nothing like his friend. Even though his physical appearance and memories remain exactly the same, Yoshiki knows that something is wrong and that the Hikaru he once knew is gone.

When he brings up the subject, Hikaru partially transforms into an otherworldly being who threatens to kill Yoshiki if he doesn't accept it, while professing his love for him. Shattered by grief and unable to let go of his best friend, Yoshiki struggles to move on with his life as he approaches the new Hikaru. At the same time, strange events begin to ravage their village, sowing unsettling chaos.
