Another Popular Animator Predicts the Industry Is Going to Fall

Vincent Chansard, renowned animator of series such as "Jujutsu Kaisen," "Boruto: Naruto Next Generations" and "One Piece," has issued a grim warning about the future of the anime industry. In a nearly hour-long live stream about his inspirations and experiences, Chansard painted a grim picture of the years to come, predicting a slow death for anime.

Another Popular Animator Predicts the Industry Is Going to Fall

According to Chansard, Japan is in a late stage of capitalism, and the anime industry is ramping up production to make a profit while reducing the skill level of animators. In his words to KonohaTV:

  • "We know the solution! We completely know the solution! The two main solutions to the lack of workers are, firstly, wage reassessment to attract more workers, and secondly, more ways for new members to acquire more qualifications. And what are the solutions adopted by Japanese productions at the moment? None of them! The solutions exist, but they don't want to implement them."

Chansard rejected any claims that the Japanese anime industry is going to boom or implode, instead outlining a slow death:

  • "I'll give you some possibilities. ' Lack of workers?' We already know this. What happens next? Once they reach the maximum number of workers, they will reduce the working conditions of the workers. When they can no longer get more workers, they will pay less to the ones they already have and get more benefits. That's what's scary. Not the fact that there's going to be a boom, but the fact that they're going to reduce working conditions even more, when they're bad enough as you said."

Chansard is one of the most well-known animators on social media, especially famous for his work on the Luffy vs. Kaido fight from "One Piece," "Boruto: Naruto Next Generations," and "Jujutsu Kaisen." Chansard's notoriety for his outspokenness about the industry, and specifically about the MAPPA studio of "Jujutsu Kaisen," has also been growing. He sparked controversy when he stated that he would never work with MAPPA again, stating, "I don't want to support a company that ideologically doesn't care about working conditions."

Chansard's testimony sheds light on the challenges facing the anime industry in terms of working conditions and production quality. In the meantime, his words serve as a wake-up call for the industry to reflect on how it can improve and ensure a sustainable future for animators and content creators in the world of anime.
